People are peacefully ignorant in topics they don't care about, and pretentiously knowledgeable in topics they do care about.
The problem arises when people are the former about the latter.
Likewise, people choose to remain ignorant in topics they don't understand, and choose to be pretentious in topics they do understand.
The problem here arises when they choose to be the latter about the former.
